On Your Mark, Get Set – Have Folded Flyers Printed

Let me introduce myself. I'm the flyer's big brother - the folded leaflet . I'm also known as folded flyer. I continue to count among the most popular print products available on the online print shop printworld.com. Whether for invitations, small-format product catalogues or event programmes - I am in demand because I am so versatile.

To unfold the truth about folded flyers , printworld.com has gathered some of the most important information, tips and tricks to get the most of me.

It All Comes Down to the Pages – The Difference Between Flyers and Folded Flyers

Flyers, leaflets, pamphlets, oh my. Who can tell the difference? Maybe we could shed some light on the situation. A leaflet could be a folded flyer, and a flyer could just be a handout, but a handout isn't a folded flyer and a flyer isn't necessarily a leaflet. Got it so far? Probably not. Ok, again from the top!

And in the beginning ...
… there was the flyer or Flugblatt in German which is roughly translated as a "flying sheet of paper". So in the end both languages named the object in the same way. Whether you call it a Flugblatt or a flyer is matter of personal taste. Flyers have one or two pages, i.e. a front and a back. One can search in vain for creases in its work. But what if two sides are not enough to convey the desired information? The first solution would be to adapt the format accordingly. However, from DIN A3 upwards it could get a bit unwieldy, and does anyone have the arm span required to read a flyer in A0 format at all? Solution two is therefore to reduce the font size so that everything fits on two pages. But then you quickly lose the big picture - and thus the interest of the readers.

So what to do? It's very simple, you turn two pages into four, six, eight or more by folding a sheet of paper. This is where a flyer becomes a folded flyer, also called a (folded) leaflet. Regardless of the term you choose, the purpose is the same. Folded flyers and leaflets offer space to present ideas and information over several pages. The correct organisation of a text, e.g. through dividing it into thematic blocks, as well as creating a varied design that brings together text and images, prevents the whole thing from appearing overloaded. The choice of folding pattern can be made for both practical and aesthetic reasons, although both are not necessarily mutually exclusive. With no less than 13 different types of folds, printworld.com, your folding flyer printer, certainly offers you a wide range. After all, your leaflet is not just ink on paper, but an ambassador for your ideas.

And now that we have spoken about everything in such detail, we can reveal it to you: the term flyer is today often used to refer both to the two-page and the multi-page spread. So don't be confused. At printworld.com we stick to the standard classification: If it's unfolded it belongs in the flyer category. Keep reading for more information on the topic of leaflets.

Would you like a folded leaflet? No problem. Which would you like then? Single fold, double fold, french fold? Parallel, roll, concertina fold? Or a combination of the above? No problem! One Thousand and One Papers – Which Material Should I Choose for My Folded Leaflets

The variety of leaflets is of course not just limited to fold types and formats – there is also a large selection of materials available. Which paper is used depends primarily on the intended purpose. For "special offer flyers", advertising a current promotion and therefore designed for short-term use, low weights of up to 135g are usually used. Weightier folded flyers of 170g or more radiate higher quality and are therefore often used as programme flyers for events of all kinds, or even as small-format information brochures. Invitations and thank you cards can be printed on heavyweight paper such as 300g, making them particularly stable and durable

We would like to make choosing the right paper easier for you – which is why we are presenting the most important paper grades:

Offset paper
The uncoated classic. Offset paper has a matt treated surface. Due to its rough structure, it absorbs ink very well, a fact that makes it easy to write on. Due to the way colours are absorbed, images may lose some depth of field, but also appear softer. You can order offset papers from printworld.com in 80g, 90g and 120g.

Coated art paper
The coated counterpart to offset paper. They owe their smooth texture to the application of a binding agent which seals the surface so that less ink is absorbed than with offset papers. This results in brilliant colours and sharp contours. Coated art papers are not suitable for writing, printing or stamping. You can choose between 90g, 115g, 135g, 170g, 250g and 300g, in each case with a matt or gloss coating.

The Coating Is on – And the Ink Is Too: Why Dispersion Coating Is Worth It

Whether for a business opening, company presentation or customer visit: One constantly comes into contact with interested parties and potential buyers, and naturally wants to present one's product, company and oneself in the right light, in words, pictures and in writing. It would, of course, be fatal if the ink on information leaflets was to smear, the edges of business cards were dirty and the product catalogue had scratches. Not exactly a good impression.

To spare such debacles, printworld.com offers aqueous coating as a finishing option.

A short excursion into chemistry teaches us that dispersions are mixtures of two or more substances, whereby the constituent substances are contained in the mixture in varying proportions. Dispersion coatings consist primarily of water and various solids such as plastic polymers, resins and other additives like waxes, wetting agents and defoamers. The coating dries as it evaporates and absorbs the water content, where necessary accelerated by additional heat.

And here's the thing you really want to know: Dispersion coating ensures that surfaces are better protected against scratches, abrasion and wear, thus increasing the resistance and durability of the coated product. At the same time, it enhances the appearance of the surface. Dispersion coating offers protection and finishing in one package. printworld.com offers you this functional coating for leaflets as well as many other products: Be it a business card or a poster, a presentation folder, a wire-stitched brochure or a perfect-bound magazine; we can varnish them all. Dispersion coating is primarily used on coated art paper. printworld.com offers you this finishing option for 135g and 170g paper. Coatings are generally applied for weights over 250g.

Small Guide to Creating Correct Print Data

FAQ: Questions answered in a nutshell.
Got a question? We have the answer.

To ensure that we end up printing what you design in your print data, we ask you to always refer to the data sheet for the respective product before placing an order. There you can find general information and tips on how to avoid pitfalls.

The first hurdle is often in setting up the correct format. First, it is important that you define the open format using the trim box. You should additionally allow a bleed of at least 2 mm around the borders for any layout elements that extend to the edge of the page. Last but not least, it is advisable to place text and images which is not bleed-off with a safety clearance of at least 5 mm from the edge. What is the point in all this? This way you avoid parts of your layout falling victim to manufacturing tolerances during further processing, e.g. cutting and folding.

A further note concerning fold sizes - check whether you have created a file with the right dimensions for your desired fold type - page lengths do in fact vary depending on the fold type.

Tip: You should also pay particular attention to the orientation of the pages and their correct order within the print data - after all, the pages should not be upside down or ordered incorrectly!

And that was of course by no means everything - you will find further information on creating print data in the data sheets for the individual leaflets and in our FAQs on data handling.
