Step up Your Game with the Step Fold

Leaflet Mini-Series "Stories Round the Bend" – Chapter 6 - The Product with a Thousand Names.

Has this ever happened to you? You want to create and order printed materials with several pages in order to launch a new product, a new service, a new branch ... well, at any rate, you are looking to announce something new and want to promote it. So what do you do? Turn on your computer, get on the internet, open up your search engine. There you purposefully enter the term "flyer" - and are irritated to find that you end up with the wrong product because a flyer is only a double-sided page. So back to the drawing board you go. However, it soon turns out that your search is neither quick nor successful because after a brief frenzy of search queries you realise there are just too many possible names for the product you want. There is B for "booklet" or is it "brochure"? How about L for "leaflet" or P for "pamphlet".

So you dive deeper into your research. What exactly is the difference between each of these things. Let's look at B. Booklets and brochures. Some say that a booklet is smaller than a brochure, while others say it comes down to the binding. But when does a brochure turn into a catalogue or a booklet into a magazine? This is getting confusing, right?

You might have more luck with L for leaflet, or is it F for folded flyer, or maybe it's P for pamphlet. Is there a difference in their sizes, or how many pages each include? Is a pamphlet a British thing, and the leaflet an American thing? Now that you spent several hours or maybe even days of in-depth research to find the correct term, you may realise that the marketing materials that you wanted to produce in the first place are already old news. But in a way, it wasn't all for nothing, since at least you've now added a few dozen semi-clarified technical terms to your vocabulary.

If you're smart - and we assume you are - you will have spared yourself the odyssey from the get go, because you know that to create something multi-sided it must be folded or creased (you can read more about the difference between the two in the leaflets); So you'll immediately start looking for folded flyers or folded leaflets and quickly find what you're looking for.

The Step Fold in Portrait.

Leaflets with step fold

Do you also long to change the record? Is the next product launch, the next offer or the next company event approaching and you want to let your customers know? What do you do? Dig out an old text that you already used for the last ten promotions and simply update it where necessary? Then flip a coin to decide between a roll fold and a z-fold, and voila? Have you had enough of that? Enough of the same old generic formula? Do you think the time has come for something new? Time for a fresh folded flyer instead of a boring leaflet? Dare to make a new start - with the step fold from your online print shoponline print shop printworld.com - guaranteed to take you to new heights.

Are we laying this on too thick? Perhaps. And we, of course, love all kinds of folds. And if the roll fold and the z-fold are still your favourites, then great. But if you are really looking for something new, then the step fold is certainly worth considering. Especially if in your folded leaflet you want to present information divided into thematic blocks. In this case, the step fold lets you present individual sections so that they catch the eye on first glance, with no need for any clever layout elements. How does it achieve this? Using a small trick with a massive effect. The step fold is narrower at the front and becomes wider and wider as you work your way towards the back, so that the back pages protrude at the right edge. This is precisely where you can place information to guide the interested reader straight to the good bits.

Bringing the Step Fold into Form

The step fold is a parallel fold with several sections folded in alternating directions, thus forming a zigzag fold. Parallel fold, zigzag fold, step fold - which is it? In fact, all of them. As we discussed in chapter 2 cross fold with roll fold) of our mini-series about folding, the parallel fold is the umbrella category, the zigzag fold - also known as concertina fold - one of its subtypes, and the step fold - well, it's a special kind of concertina fold, so to speak. Precisely because it is folded in zigzag like the concertina fold. What makes it special is the offset of the folds. It comes into its own in its closed form, creating the step pattern that gives the product its name. This is due to the protrusion of the pages behind the cover, by ten centimetres per step.

2 + 4 = 6: Number of Pages, Formats, Paper Weight.

Two plus four makes six. You can easily remember the order parameters for the step fold with the help of this formula. Your online print shop printworld.com produces these staggered folding flyers on eight or ten pages (2); in A6 format (105 x 148 mm), the two long versions 100 x 210 mm and 105 x 210 mm, as well as 115 x 297 mm (4); and in paper thicknesses from 80g to 170g (6). As for paper, you also have the option of choosing between offset and coated art papers. The latter is, of course, available in either "matt" or "gloss" variants.

A Few Words on Print Data: What Should I Keep in Mind When Designing a Folded Leaflet with Step Fold?

Anyone who's already read one of the various texts on our folded flyers will know what comes next: You will sometimes come across questions when creating the print data. To help you answer these we provide an individual data sheet for each product. This contains all the information you need to correctly create a print file, from required file format to the bleed margin and colour space. One possible stumbling block when designing the accordion fold is probably the offset of the fold, i.e. the increasing page width towards the back. So that nothing goes wrong here and the rebate can be deployed to full effect , it's definitely worth taking a look at the data sheet. There is also a diagram illustrating the width of each side. Whether for the accordion fold or another printed product: In case anything doesn't fit, our data check will let you know which changes are necessary.

Mind: You can choose between a basic check and an advanced check while ordering. The basic check tests your file for general printability. It does not however cover criteria such as colour space or resolution. These factors are covered as part of the advanced check. Especially if you don't create print data on a daily basis, or if you have a particularly demanding order, it is worth investing the reasonable extra cost for the advanced data check. The result is not only a preview PDF and a test report - both also part of the basic check - but also a PDF file with specific notes on the print file.

Other Members of the Folded Flyers Family.

If you have got as far as the step fold, you will have noticed that it is just one of many. It is hard to believe how many different ways there are to turn a sheet of paper into a folded flyer. There are in fact almost as many fold types as there are uses. And so the step fold is also accompanied by roll fold, z-fold/concertina fold, gate fold, frog fold oder dem parallel/single fold ... along with the other nine fold types that are available from printworld.com.
