A Pleasure Rather Than a Pain to Read – What Makes Brochures with Thread Sewn Binding so Special?

Fadenheftung heißt Qualität
Classy and durable: that's what thread-bound brochures are all about..

Thread sewn binding is probably the most sophisticated method for binding books and brochures. In contrast to perfect binding, in which the folded edge of sheets is first scored and then glued to the spine of the book or brochure with an adhesive film, brochures with thread stitching are additionally sewn. To do this, the book is divided into individual folded sheets which are then sewn together using a special bookbinding thread. Each layer is then sewn a second time and additionally glued to the spine.

Thread sewn binding results in books and brochures that are extremely stable and durable. This construction prevents the adhesive from breaking and individual pages from falling out. The book can also be spread wide open without the pages closing again by themselves.

If you're looking for something a bit more simple, you can also have perfect bound brochures or wire stitched brochures printed. At any rate, it's worth taking a look.

Front and Back Endpaper, Endbands and Bookmark.

If you intend to have a brochure or book printed, you may come across some technical terms. But what do they actually mean? We of course do not want to keep you in the dark.

Vorsatz und Nachsatz verleihen Stabilität.
Front and back endpaper give your brochure stability and protect it from dirt.

What is front/back endpaper?

The front and back endpaper is glued to the book cover and the book block. As the names suggest, the front endpaper comes before the first page and the back endpaper after the last page. The front and back endpapers each consist of a double sheet folded in the middle, the pastedown and the flyleaf. The pastedown is glued to the cover for stability, while the flyleaf is there to protect contents from dirt and dust.

What is an endband?

The endband is a small coloured ribbon that is glued to the upper and lower edge of the spine. It covers up the gap between a hardcover brochure's spine and book block. This lends an even more refined character and also reduces the risk of damage and soiling.

What is a bookmark?

The bookmark or book ribbon is a strip of cloth that is attached to the head of the book block and serves as a place holder when slipped between the pages. It usually extends beyond the lower edge and thus serves as a marker or reference point. Thanks to this you will never again open to the wrong page.
