I unpack my moving box and place the following on my desk: My computer, because I can't do without it; a writing pad - yes, I am old school, no matter how many opportunities I have to write my notes digitally, my inspiration calls for paper; my arsenal of good old ballpoint pens, pencils and highlighters; the token green plant, since colleagues have in the past complained that my workplace looks too dreary; and finally ... my 3-month mini desk calendar, so that I'm always "up to date".
It's got quite a complicated name when you think about it. "3-month desk calendar". A calendar that only shows three months? How absurd. This is, of course, nonsense; like all regular calendars, it covers all twelve months from January to December. But unlike the classic wall calendar, I have three months in one view instead of one, so I can have a look into the past and the future at the same time. This type of calendar simply makes a classy promotional gift. Handy, practical, informative - every time the recipient is checking for their next upcoming appointment, event or holiday, they will notice the benefactor's company logo thanks to the integrated advertising space. And while I am looking at mine again ... ... I first find out all there is to know about the 3-month desk calendar and discover that the first decision is what to use to keep my calendar upright - cardboard or stainless steel? Let us take a closer look at the two designs.
The 3-month desk calendar essentially consists of just two parts: Firstly, the calendar, which is mounted on the cardboard stand using adhesive. The erected calendar is shaped like a triangular roof, or more elegantly put, a three-sided prism.
A small excursion for those who can barely remember their geometry lessons: The three-sided prism is comprised of three rectangles - one at the base, two on the side; while the other two side faces are formed by triangles.
Back to the cardboard stand. This offers three areas which can be freely designed. For example, at the top there is 95 x 48 mm of space for your claim, contact details and captivating design - after all, this area is the first thing that catches the viewer's eye; the narrow 95 x 15 mm strip at the bottom edge can be used to once again place a logo, for example; and then the entire back area of 95 x 198 mm is a playground for creative ideas. Material for the advertising space is 305g solid bleached sulphate (SBS) board, which can be printed in four colours.
And how about the mini desk calendar with a stainless steel stand? It's pleasing to look at, the way it sits resplendent on the desk in its chromonickel steel robe with stand. In comparison to the version with the cardboard stand, it may only offer one advertising space, which is also narrower, but even on 95 x 25 mm there is enough room for a company logo and more.
Here are some more or less technical details about the calendar. Let's start with the paper type. The 12 pages will be printed on 75g offset paper. Each individual sheet covers three consecutive months. The common use of the 3-month desk calendar follows the principle "past - present - future", i.e. the current calendar page shows the current month in the middle and preceding and successive months above and below. It includes a free foreign language course - the calendar is trilingual by default, in English, French and German. There is a date slider so that when you look at the calendar, you immediately see the current day. In addition to day, month and year, the calendar also shows the calendar weeks. For the sake of clarity, the weekdays Monday to Friday have a black background, Saturdays are greyed out and Sundays and public holidays are marked red. In short - everything you would expect from any other printworld calendar.
With the stainless steel version, nearly everything remains the same. However, this calendar offers a surprise that may not be noticed until the end of 2020. Instead of 12 months you will find 24. New year without changing the calendar, so to speak. The block of 24 pages is held in its place on the stand thanks to the stainless steel support surface. The magnetic date slider is held to the calendar, where it can be moved around.
Cardboard and stainless steel calendars both have something very important in common: both require particular care when creating the print file. The combination of advertising space and calendar demands a keen eye for dimensions, bleed and safety distance when it comes to the placement of the layout. So that ultimately nothing escapes the eye. With the cardboard calendar, you should think in advance about which message should appear on which advertising space, because there are three of them in total - on the top, bottom and back. The stainless steel calendar has a "white underlay". To keep print images tidy, all inserted coloured elements are automatically highlighted in white. If you still wish to include white elements in your layout, you can simply add one per cent yellow.
