Protection and Finish in One – Laminated Business Cards

Monday, 10 am, at your trade fair stand: Customers and business partners stop by; you chat, talk business, exchange business cards. Not only do the business cards that you hand out to your interlocutors look good, they will also last for a long time. Why? Because they are laminated.

What Is the Difference Between Foil Lamination and Cellophane Lamination?

Foil lamination, also synonymous with cellophane lamination, is a widespread technique for print finishing, which your online print shop printworld.com of course also offers. With us you can have business cards printed on both sides then matt laminated in the "slim long format" 90 x 50 mm. A special treat: We print your laminated business cards on particularly robust 400g coated art paper. This means you score double points for your business cards in the struggle for attention - with foil lamination and paper thickness. Your business card will never feel soggy, but instead gives an impression of sturdiness as soon as it is handed over; on top of that, the matt foil lamination ensures a velvety soft feel.

By the way: The "cellophane lamination" process relies on "cellophane", which you have certainly heard of. It is the brand name of cellulose hydrate, also known as cellulose foil - a plastic used for packaging. It is no longer used as a finish for printing applications, but rather as a packaging foil, for example for confectionery. This marketing trick - since the transparent foil ensures that the goods can be seen immediately - has been in use for more than 100 years.

How Are Business Cards Laminated?

As the name suggests, two things are needed for foil lamination: a foil and a laminating agent. The latter is required to ensure that the foil adheres to the material to which it is applied or "laminated". At printworld.com we use thermal lamination to fix the cellophane wrapping. In this process the laminating agent, a thermally-activated adhesive, is already applied to the matt foil. In the first step, this adhesive is heated so that it melts. In step two, pressure is used to apply the foil with the melted laminating agent to the paper surface of the business card. The result is an unbreakable bond between card and foil.

Why Should I Have My Business Card Laminated?

Foil lamination not only adds to the appearance of your print product. A business card undergoes countless hardships throughout its existence: A card that is often picked up, because you still haven't saved the contact's phone number in your phone, will quickly show signs of use; if it is lying on a desk and you accidentally spill the remnants of a water glass, it will leave water stains, and in the worst case the contact details will be blurred. A foil lamination largely prevents such dangers, since it is wipeable and prevents rapid wear and tear. You of course should not spill the hydrochloric acid from the chemistry set or a bottle of red wine on your business card. But generally, the lamination protects the surface of the printed product, thus extending the life of your business card - so that you can still use and present it the day after tomorrow.

Which Other Products From printworld.com Can I Have Laminated?

In addition to business cards on 400g photo printing paper, which we laminate on both sides with a matt foil, many of our other print products can be ordered from us with lamination. For example, we produce laminated flyers for paper weights from 170g upwards. A classic example would be for use as a menu, which of course entails a great deal of daily wear and tear. Lamination ensures that the menu does not have to be changed every time food or drink particles land on it, since they can simply be wiped away. Lamination is also used for personal organizers and brochures - whether with wire-stitching, perfect or thread binding. The laminated cover not only protects against dirt, moisture and abrasion, but in the case of the wire-stitched version, it also prevents scratches.
