Why Do We Print "Beer Mats" Today Instead of Just "Beer Coasters"?
Have you ever wondered why the German word for beer mat, "Bierdeckel," literally means "beer lid"?
While we're already busy printing your beer mats, here's a short story about how the lid became a coaster.
Long before our time, it was common practice to protect one's beer mug with an ornately decorated pewter lid to keep out flies and other pests. Since citizens from poorer social classes couldn't afford such lids, they had to make do with other means. So they took pine branches, cut them into slices, and used them to cover their beer mugs.
Over time, the production process grew increasingly sophisticated, and toward the end of the 19th century, a Saxon inventor created the forerunner of today's beer mat, made from pulped paper. From that point on, the beer mat gradually began to migrate from atop the glass to underneath it – but it kept its original name.
Today, the beer mat is, above all, the perfect promotional item for your business. Your coasters are made from a white beer mat board with a thickness of 1.4 mm. This sturdy board is characterized above all by its high absorbency, thanks to its uncoated surface layers. Also known as beer felt or beer felt board, this material is further distinguished by its high bulk combined with very low weight.
Designing Your Beer Mats Correctly: Simply Use Our Design Templates
Of course, you can have your coasters printed with your own custom design. Simply create your individual layout – or perhaps design a photo coaster – and upload the PDF file; we'll take care of the rest!
To make sure your printed beer mat turns out exactly as you envisioned, please follow the guidance in the data sheet or design template for your chosen beer mat style. As a rule of thumb, plan for a 2 mm bleed allowance on any elements that extend to the edge of your beer mat. In addition, all important content such as text, logos, and graphics should be positioned with a 3 mm safety margin from the edge, to avoid falling victim to potential manufacturing tolerances.
