Business Cards on Grass Paper – Paper with a Natural Look

Business cards are an essential part of business stationery, and the material you choose plays a major role in shaping their visual appearance. We produce business cards on grass paper using 275 g/m² grass board. Its characteristic features include a slightly greenish to brownish colour and visible grass inclusions, which give the paper its natural appearance. This means the material already has a distinctive look of its own even before the design is applied.

How Is Grass Paper Made?

Grass, as a key component, is a renewable raw material sourced from regional agricultural compensation areas. Compared with wood, grass contains less lignin, which means there is less need for complex removal processes involving large amounts of water and chemicals. These properties have a positive effect on the manufacturing process. The grass fibre, which is an essential component of every grass paper, is produced purely mechanically and without the use of chemicals. Compared with producing pulp from wood, this saves CO2, water and energy, thereby contributing positively to the overall environmental footprint.

The hay is cleaned with air, cut and ground before being compressed into transport-friendly grass pellets. However, wood cannot yet be eliminated completely. Depending on the final product, the manufacture of grass paper still requires wood pulp or, ideally, fibres from recycled paper. The major advantage is that incorporating grass fibres into the paper production process reduces the amount of pulp required and therefore the use of trees as a primary raw material – resulting in an overall reduction of 30 to 50 percent.

At the paper mill, virgin-fibre pulp or recovered paper fibres are mixed together in a pulper, soaked and made pumpable. The watery fibre pulp then moves onto the paper screen and passes through pressing and drying stages. The long paper webs are subsequently wound onto rolls and stored for later processing.

What Are the Advantages of Grass Paper?

Grass paper can be printed in the same way as conventional paper, offers good stability and is fully recyclable. Grass is a rapidly renewable raw material, usually sourced from ecological compensation areas, and can also be obtained regionally. This is a major advantage, as it reduces transport distances and keeps added value within the region.

What Are the Characteristics of Business Cards Made from Grass Paper?

One look at the paper immediately reveals its natural character. The paper has a slightly green to brown colour and contains visible inclusions. This is also the key distinguishing feature of this special paper. Grass paper is also recyclable and can be disposed of with waste paper without concern, allowing it to remain within the recycling cycle.

FAQ

Are Business Cards on Grass Paper “Sustainable” or “Environmentally Friendly”?

Business cards made from grass paper cannot automatically be described as sustainable or environmentally friendly. Due to the grass-fibre manufacturing process, and in combination with a reduced proportion of virgin-fibre pulp or the addition of recycled fibres in the final product, grass paper can have a comparatively better environmental footprint than conventional papers.

Can Grass Paper Be Recycled with Waste Paper?

Grass paper can be disposed of with normal waste paper and returned to the recycling cycle.

Can a Consistent Paper Colour Be Guaranteed?

Grass paper is an unbleached natural product and is therefore subject to certain production-related variations. Depending on the proportion of grass used and the time of harvest, the paper colour can vary from a greenish shade to a light or rich beige. The characteristic grass inclusions also contribute to its highly individual appearance.
